This NYTimes story about the outsourcing of manhole cover manufacturing drives the point home:"The scene was as spectacular as it was anachronistic: flames, sweat and liquid iron mixing in the smoke like something from the Middle Ages."
It does seem to shed some light on globalization and, in particular, transportation costs versus labor costs.
